Located in northwest Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, the MMSL Block Association includes the homes and businesses within a four-block area composed of two parallel streets (Macon Street and MacDonough Street) and two parallel avenues (Lewis Avenue and Stuyvesant Avenue). Our Association is nestled within Bed-Stuy’s Stuyvesant Heights Historic District designated in 1971 by the New York Landmark and Preservation Commission as the majority of our beautiful buildings were built between the 1870s and 1900s. The district’s original span included over 430 structures (as well as ironwork gates, railings, etcetera) built over a 50-year period. In 2013, a large extension was designated that increased the total number of structures within the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District to approximately 825 buildings.
MMSL Block Association has been around since the mid-50s, with the objective of promoting the welfare of our neighborhood in partnership with local businesses, other Stuyvesant Heights organizations, and community boards.
The collective community voice that our Block Association has represented since its founding has allowed us to effectively promote our agenda and maintain neighborhood cohesiveness. Our projects (that include The Stuyvesant Heights Oral History Project) and our activities (that include our annual, award-winning Beautification efforts) further reinforce our strong sense of community.
